Burhani Women’s Association: Business Seminar with Tisha Hammond
Burhani Women’s Association of Detroit held a business seminar on November 17th, 2019 for women in our local community. The featured guest speaker, Tisha Hammond, also known as the Small Business Cheerleader, focused on how to launch a business by identifying your personal “3 Ps” : Profit, Purpose, and Popularity. As empowered women empowering women, Burhani Women’s Association of Detroit’s goal is to inspire women to chase their business dreams.
The speaker line-up included fellow women in business who shared their varied journeys of startup to established businesses. Their backgrounds included retail, service, and healthcare industries and ran the gamut of less than 5 years in business to nearly 20 years in business. They shared their stories of faith, perseverance, and community and family support to get to where they are today.
According to the ninth annual State of Women-Owned Businesses Report, Michigan has ranked at the top of the nation for the growth of women-owned firms since 2014. The Metro Detroit area also has the largest growth rate of women-owned firms, ranking as the top metropolitan area with an 88% increase in the past five years1. Building on this momentum, Burhani Women’s Association also highlighted the numerous government and internal community resources available to women interested in starting or growing their business.
The highlight of the day included the launch of a new business, Delight Tree, that sells homemade, natural, and preservative free beetroot relish and sauce. After lunch, attendees were able to shop at the stalls of local woman-owned businesses that ranged from arts and crafts to jewelry to handmade beauty products, bukhur and food items.
The event can be summed up by one attendee who shared: “Thank you for putting together such an amazing and motivational seminar. Loved it and felt such a strong sense of community! I look forward to starting my own CPA firm!”
